Prepaid Cards Vs Gift Cards: An Overview
Prepaid cards and gift cards are both pieces of plastic that can be used to make purchases. They make popular presents as well: A versatile way to give a recipient the funds to buy whatever they like that seems safer and a touch classier than a wad of cash, and more convenient than a personal check. The biggest difference between the two reflects their permanence: prepaid cards can be reloaded and used indefinitely, while gift cards can generally only be used until the dollar amount on them is exhausted.
Are Prepaid Cards Good For International Travel
Prepaid cards may also be sold where youd get your favorite gift card, but they are not the same thing. Prepaid cards differ in one specific way: they can and are meant to be reloaded. However, while they can be used internationally, thats not a given. A prepaid card has rules and regulations just like gift cards, although often far fewer rules. If you can get a reloadable gift card, note the restrictions as most labeled gift cards are only spendable within the United States. Prepaid cards, specifically, are not guaranteed to have any protection, regardless of which logo is on the card. Fortunately, each prepaid card or company will list those protective clauses.
Prepaid cards for specific stores or businesses can rarely be used internationally. But even a Visa or Mastercard prepaid card may have domestic limits. Reloadables are meant to be purchased once and then have additional funds added as the initial value is spent. For that reason, theyre often safer and smarter budgeting solutions for domestic travelers than debit or traditional credit cards. If you do want an international prepaid card, youll need to opt for a specific travel card such as Visa Travel Money which is intended for such needs.
Finding The Gift Card Security Code
Most sites will ask for a card number, an expiration date and a security code to complete your purchase. Because gift cards usually have all the same information on them as regular cards do, minus the name of the cardholder, you won’t need to worry about relearning how to buy things online. Some online companies will even show you where to find the CVV on your card to help you complete the transaction.

Three- or four-digit security codes are a simple but effective protection against fraud and theft that have become standard on all credit, debit and gift cards. Depending on the institution your gift card is tied to, the gift card’s three-digit security code will likely still be located in the spot it usually is on a card on the back of the card. Sometimes, however, this code may be on the front.

What Is A Prepaid Card
Prepaid cards are technically a type of debit card. Issued by a financial institution or credit card companyVisa, MasterCard, and Discover all offer themthey are deposited or “loaded” with a certain amount of money. They then can be used in person or online to purchase items or pay bills. They can also be used at ATMs to withdraw cash.
Just like regular credit cards, prepaid credit cards have a number and an expiration date printed on the front or back, and they generally can be used in the same places. The amount of money deposited or “loaded” onto the card represents the card’s credit limitthat is, how much can be charged on it. Once the balance on the card had been exhausted, the card is worthless, unless more funds are deposited on it. In fact, a prepaid debit card can be used repeatedly, so long as the cardholder keeps adding money to the card. It may carry a monthly fee, however.
Although the terms are often used interchangeably, these prepaid cards are not the same as prepaid credit cards. Requiring an application, a credit check, and approval from the issuer, a prepaid credit card functions like a regular : the cardholder can maintain an outstanding balance, receives monthly statements, etc. The key difference is that approval for the card is contingent on a security depositcollateral for the issuer, in case the cardholder falls delinquent in their payments.
Register Your Mastercard Visa Or Amex Gift Card With The Issuing Bank
If your card doesnt already have your name and zip code associated with it, youll need to do that through the financial institution that issued the card. Sometimes there will be a registration URL on the back of the card. If not, look for the name of the institution on the card and then Google gift card registration. That should get you to the right site. If it’s an Amex gift card, use this link. Once there, youll be asked to verify the card info, and then youll have the option of registering the card with your name and address. This is also a good time to confirm the available balance.

In the example above, the red box is where youll find your card number. In purple, youll find the expiration date.
The blue box is the four-digit Card Identification Code which is NOT the CSV number. You will not need the four-digit CID number when making an online purchase.

How To Use A Mastercard Visa Or Amex Gift Card On Amazon
by Josh Kirschner on January 14, 2021in , , , ::
Trying to use a Mastercard, Visa or Amex Gift Card on Amazon can cause several headaches. First, simply registering the card as a payment method can be tricky. Amazon requires a name and billing address to register a credit card as a means of payment. Since many gift cards arent personalized to you, there is no name or zip code to enter, and Amazon wont be able to validate the card.
Even if you get through that first hurdle, Mastercard, Visa or Amex gift cards arent well-suited to online purchasing. Since Amazon doesnt allow you to split a purchase among multiple cards, if your gift card is worth $50 and your order is $70, theres no way to make up the difference, and your transaction will simply be declined. On the flip side, if your order is $47, youll be left with a $3 balance on your gift card, which isnt useful for anything.
However, there are a couple of tricks that will make using a gift card on Amazon a breeze. In fact, theres probably . Heres what you need to know.

Cvv Codes And Id Numbers
CVV codes, which American Express refers to as card identification numbers, offer an extra layer of security and protection to cardholders by making it more difficult for thieves to make use of stolen credit card numbers, regardless of how they managed to find them.
According to Experian.com, even major retailers that store their customers’ credit card information are not allowed to retain the CVV codes, and only make use of them to authorize payments at the moment their customers make their purchases. Unfortunately, while some vendors do ask for ID when processing credit or debit card purchases, this is not universal, and a thief who’s managed to get their hands on your card will be able to bypass the security offered by the CVV or CID.
Most credit card companies will print their three-digit CVV codes on the back of the credit card, but American Express does things just a little bit differently. Instead of printing the security code on the back of the card, American Express prints it on the front of the card, above or beside the card number. Another key difference to note here is that American Express uses four-digit security codes rather than three-digit codes. The purpose of this defensive measure remains the same for all cards, however.

How To Use American Express Gift Card Online
Before making a purchase, card owners are required to register the card. Want to know why? When an online order is placed, ecommerce stores often use a security process called Address Verification System to confirm the card is linked to a billing address. Since your American Express gift card did not have your address associated with it when you received it, any attempts to make a purchase online before registering the card will likely result in a rejected order.
To register your AMEX gift card for online purchases, you must call their customer service line at 1-877-297-4438. You will be asked to enter the 15-digit card number and security code. Then you will need to speak with a customer service agent to provide your address for registration.
Online Activation And Balance Checking
Personally, I think online activation is the easiest route. The American Express balance checking page also doubles for card activation.
Visit the American Express Balance page to sign in and activate your card. The website should prompt you to enter in your 15-Digit Card Number, Expiration Date, and 4-Digit Card ID.
Once you sign in your card has been activated.
