A Gas Station Stole $75 From My $100 Visa Gift Card What Can I Do

On Wednesday night, I stopped my a local gas station and was going to but $20 in gas from the $100 Visa Gift Card my friend had given me for tutoring his brother. I couldn’t use it at the pump as it has to match with the zip code and with it being a gift card, it didn’t match up. So I go inside to use the card and the clerk tells me it was declined. I thought nothing of it at the time, as I thought I might have to activate it or it wouldn’t take it since I had just tried using it at the pump. So I end up buying gas with my credit card.

Fast Forward to today. I spent $19 on the card later that night and had not used it since. I was buying myself lunch today which totaled $7.76. I tried to use the card and it was rejected for insufficient funds. I WAS PISSED. I go home and check the balance online. Apparently almost exactly one hour after I left the gas station Wednesday night, someone charged $75 to it.

I know it was at the gas station as the online balance shows as much. I am sooooo pissed right now, but I don’t want to do anything rash. After talking to my father, I’m going to go demand my money back tomorrow and threaten to call the cops and/or a newspaper if it’s not corrected. Is this the right direction to go? Any suggestions?

EDIT: Thanks for the info guys. I was just pretty pissed to find myself out $75. Obviously I was overreacting.

Paying At Pump Or In Store May Affect Earnings

Anecdotally, some card users have reported on various websites that they have used the Citi Costco cards at QuikTrip and Circle K and received the full 4 percent. Sometimes, there is a different MCC for paying with a card at the gas pump as opposed to walking inside and paying, so if you go in to pay, that might explain why you are not receiving the 4 percent cash back at certain gas stations although in some cases you can receive the 4 percent at the pump and inside the store.

Tip:Sometimes, there is a different MCC for paying with a card at the gas pump as opposed to walking inside and paying.

It would be nice to think that there is nationwide consistency in how these rules are applied, but thats just not the way category bonuses work. Unfortunately, sometimes its just a matter of trial and error.

Can You Use Visa Gift Cards At Gas Stations

Yes, you can use Visa gift cards at a gas station. However, gift cards can get declined at gas stations if you have a low balance because banks will not allow gift cards to be overspent, and they set a high pre-authorization amount. Therefore, you should always have more than $10 on the Visa gift card.

To use the card at various locations, you must activate it for smooth operations. The activation can be done on giftcards.com or by calling the toll-free number written on the back of the card. First, you need to mention the 16 digit card number written on the front and the three-digit card verification number labeled on the back of the card. After that, you must enter the activation code, which would be provided to you by the individual or company who provided you the card. You need to activate the card before use initially, and this would not be possible without the activation number. Due to security reasons, the official website and the customer care representative will not provide it.

Tips On Obtaining Selecting Prepaid Debit Cards

Prepaid debit cards are easy to get. All you need is cash to meet the minimum load requirement. If you decide to purchase a prepaid debit card, keep these tips in mind:

  • Look for a card that provides you with a lot of benefits and options. Examples include the ability to receive direct deposits, reload funds from your bank account and make ATM withdrawals.

  • Inquire about fees. Some companies will charge you a fee to activate the card, a fee to use the card, a monthly fee, and ATM fees. These fees are deducted from your balance. For example if you get a prepaid VISA card for $250 and have an activation fee of $10, your available balance will be reduced to $240.

  • Check with theBetter Business Bureau to verify if the card issuer is reputable. Remember, the store that sells the prepaid card is not the issuer of the card. You will find the name of the issuing financial institution on the card itself.

Why Cant I Buy Stuff Online With My Visa Gift Card

If you have a problem using your gift card for online or telephone purchases, the most likely reason is that the merchants fraud screening process is matching the billing information entered at checkout with the billing information on your gift card account. If the addresses dont match, the card may decline.

Then The Transaction Is Settled

When the transaction from the pump is later settled, the temporary hold on your funds is released and replaced with a charge for the actual amount of the fuel purchased.

Although this process happens every time you use a card at the pump, most people dont even notice it because the charges are settled for the actual purchase amount before they check their bank statements. But gift cards, handled this way, may pose a problem. Even though your gift card may have enough to cover the actual gasoline purchase, the card will be declined if it cant cover the guestimate made by the machine.

The primary reason that gift cards get declined at gas stations is that banks will not allow gift cards to be overspent therefore, a pre-authorization charge greater than the balance of the gift card will be denied. Although you may drive up to the pump intending to use $40 of a $50 gas station gift card, the pump will still try to charge the standard pre-authorization amount. If the temporary hold amount is greater than your gift cards value, the entire transaction will be declined.

Do Visa Gift Cards Expire

Despite the fact that most cards have a five- to seven-year expiration date, the money never runs out. However, it has been seen that even if you tell the cashier ahead of time that you want to use two forms of payment, a card with a very low balance may be denied at check-out. Visa recommends contacting the issuer for more guidance if this occurs.

If the cards expiration date on the front passes, you can request a replacement from the original issuer. If a card is inactive for a specific amount of time, the issuer has the discretion to charge a monthly fee. For example, after 12 months of inactivity, TD bank levies a $2.50 monthly fee.

Why You Might Think Your Gift Card Got Over

Suppose, instead, that you drive up to a gas station with a gift card worth $100, but only intend to use $40 towards the purchase of gasoline. As long as the pre-authorization charge is less than $100, the transaction will be approved and you can manually stop the gas pump when it reaches the $40 limit that you set for yourself.

Though, in your calculations, there should be $60 remaining on the gift card, the pre-authorization charge may have temporarily used up more of the balance than you know. If you drive from the gas station to a restaurant and attempt to use the $60 remaining balance before the pre-authorization charge on the card is reconciled, the restaurant transaction may decline. The $60 balance will be restored when the transaction is settled, but you might think the gas station over charged your gift card or that the gift card no longer works in the meantime.

Visa Gift Cards Containing Only A Few Dollars Can Be Difficult To Use At Restaurants Gas Stations: Money Matters

Q: I have $4.49 remaining on a non-reloadable Visa gift card. When I tried to use it at one of my usual restaurants, I told my usual wait staff to use up the remaining balance and then I would pay the rest in cash. It was declined. I called the card issuer’s toll-free number.

I was told that with restaurants and other establishments that take tips, the gift card issuers’ system automatically puts a temporary hold on the amount being charged of an additional 20 percent. So that additional 80 cents caused the card to be declined. Even though the staff knows I always tip in cash. Why can the gift card companies get away with this?

E.H., Chesterland

A: I don’t think this is a case of anyone getting away with anything. Non-reloadable gift cards and prepaid debit cards just come with some quirks, including that you shouldn’t use them at places like gas stations or restaurants or other merchants where the final total isn’t known up front.

In the case of gas stations, even if the Visa gift card had $100 on it, the station could put a hold on it for $50 or $75, even if you bought only $20 in gas. The unpurchased amount wouldn’t be released back to your card for a day or two, in some cases.

And you encountered one of the reasons why it can be tricky to use a Visa gift card or prepaid debit card at a restaurant.

As far as where to use it: The grocery store is good place. They’re good at splitting bills between multiple forms of payment without hassles.
