How Long Do Visa Gift Cards Last

Prepaid Cards Vs Gift Cards: An Overview

How long does a Visa gift card take to activate?

Prepaid cards and gift cards are both pieces of plastic that can be used to make purchases. They make popular presents as well: A versatile way to give a recipient the funds to buy whatever they like that seems safer and a touch classier than a wad of cash, and more convenient than a personal check. The biggest difference between the two reflects their permanence: prepaid cards can be reloaded and used indefinitely, while gift cards can generally only be used until the dollar amount on them is exhausted.

Gift Cards Cannot Expire Any Earlier Than 5 Years

The law states that a gift card or general purpose prepaid card may not expire any earlier than five years from the date of activation and that if there is an expiration, the terms and conditions of that expiration must be clearly disclosed prior to purchase. Typically, that means companies will print the expiration time-frame on the card itself or on the carrier holding the card at the time of purchase.

Although open loop gift cards such as Visa gift cards, Mastercard gift cards and so forth still have published expiration dates, I havent seen a store or restaurant gift card with an expiration date on it for a few years. Once the gift card law went into effect, companies complied and, in many cases, just eliminated expiration dates altogether. Several states also subsequently passed even stricter state-level gift card laws that made expiration dates illegal. To avoid confusion across state lines , most companies adopted the no-expiration rule for all of their stores in all states.

To be absolutely certain that your gift card will not expire, read both the front and back of the card to find the terms. Since federal law requires that expiration dates must be clearly disclosed, I would expect to see a good thru date or an expires on date clearly published. If you dont find it, chances are good the card will be valid as long as the store remains solvent. .

What Are Visa Prepaid Gift Cards

Not everyone understands exactly what a prepaid card is and how they work differently from closed-loop gift cards so lets start with a clear definition of a prepaid or open-looped gift card. According to the Incentive Gift Card Council , an open-loop card or prepaid card is purchased with a set denomination that can be redeemed at any merchant that accepts the credit platform such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. These cards can be debit or credit cards depending on the product and issuer of the card.

Unused Gift Cards Can Lose Value

Even though its illegal for cards to expire for five years , they can start to lose some of their value before then. Thats because in certain circumstances, and depending on the state, businesses may be allowed to impose a fee for inactivity after a certain period of time.

To do so, however, three conditions must be met, as per the CARD Act:

    • Fees can only be charged if there has been no card activity in the year prior.
    • Only one fee per month can be charged.
    • The business must disclose if they charge any fees at the time of the sale.

Beyond the federal ruling, however, some states set their own parameters around gift card expiration and fees. California, for example, has one of the stronger gift card protections, making it unlawful to sell a gift card that has an expiration date or charges a service fee.

Likewise, in Florida, a gift card that is purchased cant expire or have a fee, but an exception is made if the gift card is donated by the business. Then, if that information is disclosed, it can have an expiration date thats at least three years after the issue date as long as its disclosed.

In an effort to remind people to cash in their gift cards, the third Saturday in January was deemed National Use Your Gift Card Day, starting in 2021. The hope is that it functions similarly to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, benefiting both retailers and consumers.

If you received a gift card over the holidays you might have already used it to buy yourself something you wanted, like items for your home or the latest electronics. But what do you do if, after your purchase, your card still has a small balance?

Its wonderful to receive a gift card, but it can be frustrating when you have just a few dollars or cents left on it, says Trae Bodge, a shopping expert for GiftCardGranny.com.

There are many reasons you may wind up with gift cards with a few dollars and cents left on them. Asking the cashier to apply, say, 50 cents toward a purchase can be embarrassing, says Bodge. Plus it’s easy to lose track of a card’s balance, or to not think to use the card when shopping. There can also be logistical hurdles to using up a small balance when shopping online.

She’s in good company. According to a recent Consumer Reports nationally representative survey of 1,004 U.S. adults, nearly 20 percent of Americans say they have three or more gift cards with balances. And nearly 40 percent of them say those cards have values of $25 or less.
