Summary Question 7 What Are The Various Spiritual Gifts That The Bible Lists
The Bible lists the gifts of the Spirit in a number of different places in Scripture. They are basically found in the writing of the Apostle Paul with one, or perhaps two references in the writings of Peter. We can note a number of things about the gifts listed.
First, no list is complete. There is thus no attempt by any New Testament writer to list all of the gifts in one place.
In addition, we find that no gift is mentioned in every list. This further indicates that there is no desire to list all of the gifts.
Furthermore, no two lists of spiritual gifts are alike. Each one is different. We also find that some of the gifts are mentioned more than once. One gift, prophecy, is mentioned four times.
When they are listed, the gifts are not necessarily given in order from the greater to the lesser. Thus, we should not always assume that the first gift listed is always the greatest gift.
We should also note that there may be some overlap between the various gifts. At times the gift is listed and at other times the person who exercises the gift is listed.
We also find that natural abilities are listed together with supernatural abilities. The Scripture makes no distinction between them.
Finally, there may be more gifts than these that are listed.
Spiritual Gifts Are For Helping Others
The purpose of God giving us spiritual gifts is clear: A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other .
We are not given spiritual gifts so we can feel good about ourselves we are not given spiritual gifts so we can look good to others we are not given spiritual gifts to manipulate or get our own way. God gives us spiritual gifts so we can help each other! Its that simple. And its genius on Gods part.
None of us are good at everything . We need each others strengths when we are weak, and others need our strengths when they are weak. This creates a healthy dependency on and appreciation for our fellow brothers and sisters. Its truly a beautiful thing when we use our spiritual gifts to help and encourage others in fact, God planned it that way.
What Exactly Are Spiritual Gifts
Everyone is on a unique spiritual journey with God. God never changes, but how He expresses Himself through His individual followers can differ. This reflects the fact that God has a plan for each persons life that plays a specific part in His master plan of making Himself known to the world.
So the spiritual gifts God gives people are part of His perfect plan for their lives. He gives each of His followers the same Spirit, because its His Spirit. But He knows each person perfectly, so He knows which gifts are part of His plan to work in the world through them. Not all of His followers receive the same spiritual gifts.
All of the spiritual gifts the Bible describes are significant, and they work best when used in the context of life within a community of other Christians.
Spiritual gifts are different from talents. Talents are specific abilities, like skill at the piano or in a sport. Talents can be practiced and developed through hard work. People who do not have the Holy Spirit within them still have many talents, and some of them might look like the gifts listed below. But they cannot access the enabling power of the Holy Spirit in exercising those talents.
If you are a follower of Jesus, as you continue growing spiritually, your gifts may become clearer. Over time, God uses circumstances to help you better understand your gifts and use them as part of His plan.

Do Spiritual Gifts Tests Line Up With Scripture
Kathy Howard talks about a popular way that believers attempt to discover their spiritual gifts in her article, “Why You Need to Beware of Spiritual Gifts Tests.”
A spiritual gifts test is a manmade tool meant to help believers discern their spiritual gifts. The believer answers a series of questions designed to discover his or her specific gifts. When kept in the proper perspective, the test can be a helpful tool, but we must remember it is limited. How can a human tool effectively measure the infinite workings of the Spirit of Christ?
At their best, spiritual gifts tests may identify spiritual gifts and natural talents. But at their worst, since they cannot distinguish between them, the tests could actually encourage believers to serve according to our natural talents rather than relying on the power and equipping of the Holy Spirit.
So, while I think spiritual gifts tests can be useful, we must remember their limitations and proceed with caution. The following three cautions can help us properly use this tool:
Nine Spiritual Gifts List
The nine gifts, as Paul reminds us, are directly sourced from God:
- Wise Counsel Clear Understanding Simple Trust
- Healing the Sick Miraculous Acts Proclamation
- Distinguishing between Spirits Tongues Interpretation of Tongues
These wonderful gifts of the Spirit not only minister to others through us but He can minister to us by them also. We can receive wise counsel, clear understanding, simple trust , etc. when we ask.

The Word Of Wisdom The 9 Gifts Of The Holy Spirit
This next gift at times will work in conjunction with the word of knowledge. Sometimes all you need is a direct word of knowledge from the Holy Spirit and it will completely solve the problem or dilemma you are dealing with.
However, there will be other times that a word of knowledge will not be quite enough to solve the problem. This is where you will now need a word of wisdom. A word of wisdom will give you the ability to be able to properly apply the knowledge that you may already have on a particular situation.
In our article, Seeking After the Knowledge of God, we explain to you the difference between knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. For instance, if someone gives you a car manual that will show you how to rebuild a car engine, that manual will give you all of the actual knowledge you will need to learn how to do it. But all of that knowledge will not do you any good unless you first understand what you are reading.
If you can understand what you are reading, then the next and final step will be to have the actual wisdom to be able to actually rebuild a car engine out in your garage once you try and do it. All of that knowledge from the car manual, and all of that understanding of that knowledge will do you no good in real life if you do not have the wisdom to be able to apply that knowledge to a real life working situation.
Here are some specific examples where we could receive words of wisdom direct from the Holy Spirit:

How Many Gifts Are There
There are several lists of spiritual gifts in the New Testament. According to these passages in 1 Corinthians, Ephesians, Romans, and 1 Peter, there are 22 named spiritual gifts. However, the lists of gifts are not identical and seemingly not comprehensive. In other words, God may have given other gifts to the church that are not explicitly mentioned in these passages.

Given In Varying Measure
The second thing I want to point out from this text is that both the gifts we have and the faith to exercise them are given to us by God in varying measure. The reason Paul teaches this truth is to help us think soberly about ourselves and not too highly. The gifted are always in danger of pride it was a terrible problem at Corinth . So Paul uncovers a profound truth that is intended to blow away all pride all self-reliance or boasting. He says in verse 6 that we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us. In other words, any distinction that sets you off from others in ability is owing to grace that is, it is freely given and not earned or deserved. So you cant boast in it.
But someone might say, Okay, I cant boast in what gift I have, but I can boast in the zeal with which I use it. Thats like the person who says, Well, I cant boast that I was born in America, but I can boast that I used my freedom to be productive and get rich. Both of those statements are wrong. Moses said to Israel in Deuteronomy 8:17,
Beware lest you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth. You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth.
And in a similar way, Paul says here in Romans 12:3,
Dont think of yourself more highly than you ought to think but think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned to him.
How Knowing Your Spiritual Gifts Can Affect Your Life
Many people go through their lives without a thought for their spiritual gifts. Everyone has them, but not everyone recognizes them. But God gives these gifts to His children as an act of love.
You are significant to God. In recognizing your gifts, you gain a deeper appreciation of the way He created you and the identity He gives you when you trust in Him.
As you grow in your understanding of your gifts and what the Holy Spirit can do through you, your affection for Christ grows. You also mature in your awareness of people around you and the role God wants to play in their lives. Using your gifts as God intended is part of going deeper in your relationship with Him.

Knowing Our Gifts And Desiring To Strengthen Others
I think it would be fair to say also from this text that you shouldnt bend your mind too much trying to label your spiritual gift before you use it. That is, dont worry about whether you can point to prophecy, or teaching, or wisdom, or knowledge, or healing, or miracles, or mercy, or administration, etc., and say, Thats mine. The way to think is this: the reason we have spiritual gifts is so that we can strengthen other peoples faith here is someone whose faith is in jeopardy how can I help him? Then do or say what seems most helpful, and if the person is helped, then you may have discovered one of your gifts.
If you warned him of the folly of his way and he repented, then perhaps you have the gift of warning. If you took a walk with her and said you knew what she was going through and lifted her hope, then perhaps you have the gift of empathy. If you had them over to your home when they were new and lonely, then perhaps you have the gift of hospitality. We must not get hung up on naming our gifts. The thing to get hung up on is, Are we doing what we can do to strengthen the faith of the people around us?
The Gift Of Administration
The Greek word for the spiritual gift of administration is kubernesis. This is a unique term that refers to a shipmaster or captain. The literal meaning is to steer, or to rule or govern. It carries the idea of someone who guides and directs a group of people toward a goal or destination. We see variations of this word in verses like Acts 27:11, and Revelation 18:17.
With this gift the Holy Spirit enables certain Christians to organize, direct, and implement plans to lead others in the various ministries of the Church. This gift is closely related to the gift of leadership, but is more goal or task oriented and is also more concerned with details and organization. See also I Corinthians 12:28, Titus 1:4-5.

1. Wisdom: ability toapply spiritual truth to meet specific needs or situations.
2. Knowledge: provide truthby revealing critical information, biblical understanding, or supernatural insight.
3. Faith: confidencein God that he will provide, protect, and answer prayers.
4. Healing: ability topray, touch, or speak words that produce spiritual, physical, or emotionalhealing.

9. Interpretation: tellothers what someone said in tongues.
The Gift Of Translation
If we have been called by the leaders of the Church to translate the word of the Lord, we can receive a gift to translate beyond our natural ability. As with all gifts, we must live righteously, study hard, and pray to receive it. When we do these things, the Lord causes us to feel a burning inside concerning the correctness of the translation . Joseph Smith had the gift of translation when he translated the Book of Mormon. This gift came to him only when he was in tune with the Spirit.

How Many Spiritual Gifts Do I Have
Every believer has at least one spiritual gift , given at his or her salvation. No believer has every spiritual gift . Our gifts differ from each other . We receive our gifts according to Gods will, not our own desire or experience .
The New Testament includes three lists of spiritual gifts. In Romans 12:3-8 we encounter seven gifts: prophecy, serving teaching, encouraging, contributing to the needs of others, leadership, and mercy
In 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, we find nine gifts: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in different kinds of tongues, and the interpretation of tongues.
And in Ephesians 4:11, we discover five gifts: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers .
This gifts discovery tool does not include the so-called sign gifts even though we believe they are valid today because most churches do not offer ministries that use them. We include the additional gifts of music and hospitality since many interpreters see them as spiritual gifts , and because they are very important to most churches ministries.
Spiritual Gifts Come From God
The Spirit of God gives special abilities to us . Just like salvation and grace, we do not earn this gift. Its just that a gift.
We must be careful to remember that these special abilities are not for our manipulation or benefit spiritual gifts are from God and for Gods purposes. We cannot take credit for anything the Spirit of God does through us while operating in our gift.

Gifts Of The Holy Spirit: Manifestation
Manifestation gifts are the ones people tend to sensationalize and therefore disqualify themselves from enjoying. In 1 Corinthians 12:7, it says God gives to each of us, not just some. This means everyone.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another amessage of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to others gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to others miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
This supernatural demonstration of the Holy Spirits power is to serve others as well as minister to ourselves. Its commonly thought these gifts are only to minister to others but thats limiting the grace of God. The Spirit can give you a message of wisdom when you ask for one in your life just as easily as He can give one to you to deliver to someone else. Let the Holy Spirit minister to you also.
These manifestation gifts are how God works through us bringing joy and fruitfulness in every one of our lives.
9 Manifestations of the Holy Spirit
- A message of wisdom
- Speaking in different kinds of tongues
- The interpretation of tongues
