How To Book An Award Ticket With Southwest
If you’ve ever booked a flight with Southwest in cash, doing so with points is almost the same. How To Earn Rapid Rewards Points
Instead of rewarding traditional airline miles, Rapid Rewards operates on a points system. You can earn points several ways: by flying on Southwest, by shopping and dining with partners, or with a Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card. Southwest is also a transfer partner of the Chase Ultimate Rewards® program.
As of October 2019, Southwest Rapid Rewards points do not expire. However, if you opt to close your account, the points in your account will be terminated.

Can I Give Someone My Southwest Points
pointspreselected charitySouthwestcan be
. In this regard, how much does it cost to transfer southwest points?
Normally Southwest Rapid Rewards points cost 2.75 cents apiece to purchase for yourself or gift, but with this promo, they cost 2.0625. Transferring points usually costs 1 cent per point, but with this promo, it’s 0.75 cents.
Additionally, can I use my Southwest credit for someone else? Cannot transfer or buy for someone else. If the amount is over $100, call Southwest Customer Service and look into resurrecting the funds for a fee of $100, which they take out of the amount. They will generally do this.
Keeping this in consideration, how do I transfer southwest points to another person for free?
Log into your account and click on Rapid Rewards® at the top of the screen. Under Manage, select Buy or Transfer points. From here you can select the appropriate transaction option on the Rapid Rewards Buy/Transfer page.
Is it worth it to transfer southwest points?
It would cost around $200 to transfer them to me. Is that worthwhile? Most airline and hotel loyalty programs allow you to transfer rewards to friends and family, but many of them will make you pay for the privilege. For example, Southwest charges one cent apiece to move points between accounts.

Merchandise And Gift Cards
First off, I considered three different merchandise items. For each item, I compared the points cost through More Rewards to the cost Id pay on the brands website. Heres what I found:
- The North Face Ladies Resolve 2 Jacket: 14,157 points or $90
- YETI Rambler® 20 oz. Tumbler: 5,849 points or $30
- Bose Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones 700: 62,745 points or $380
So, using Southwest points to buy merchandise through More Rewards doesnt provide even close to TPGs valuation of 1.5 cents per point. Likewise, if you use Southwest points to buy gift cards through More Rewards, youll only get a redemption value of 0.83 to one cent per point.
As such, I recommend saving your Southwest points until you book your next Southwest flight. But, if cash is tight and you need to redeem your points now, look for a gift card that provides a redemption value of at least one cent per point.
Should You Transfer Chase Points To Southwest Or Redeem Through Chase’s Portal
Chase gives you the option of booking travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal. If you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card Credit Card, you can redeem points toward travel purchases at a rate of $0.0125 per point. With the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you get $0.015 per point.
Booking a flight this way also generally earns you points with the airline. Award tickets don’t earn points, giving the Ultimate Rewards travel portal an edge in that regard.
You could compare the value you’ll get on a flight with each method to see which is the better deal. If that’s too time consuming, here’s a simpler solution:
- Transfer Chase points to Southwest if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card.
- Redeem Chase points through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.
Southwest flights don’t show up through the Ultimate Rewards flight search, so you’ll need to call a Chase travel advisor at 1-866-951-6592 to book one.

Everyday Spending On Credit Cards

These category bonuses and flexible redemptions really make Chase Ultimate Rewards the go-to points currency when you need to book with Southwest.
See How Much Your Points Are Worth
When booking a trip in points, you can toggle to view the prices in dollars and points on the search results page. This allows you to quickly check what kind of value you’ll get with potential award tickets.
The search results will display all the flight options for your chosen dates. If your travel dates are flexible, the Low Fare Calendar shows you the best deals for traveling on each day of the month. After you’ve chosen your itinerary, Southwest will provide a breakdown of your trip details — including the cost in points and any additional fees.

Calculating The Value Of Southwest Points
To calculate how much a large amount of Southwest points are worth, multiply the number of points by $0.014. That gives you a good baseline for their value.
Alternatively, a simple rule of thumb is that 10,000 Southwest points are generally worth at least $140 in airfare. With this information, you can easily calculate the value of 20,000 Southwest points, 50,000, 100,000, and so on.
Southwest More Rewards Get More
At the far right of the main menu, you will notice a tab called Get More. Click Travel Better in the drop-down menu to access even more items that you can purchase using Rapid Rewards points. Here you can shop categories like Pets, Coffee, and Sunglasses.
The value you get from your points is just about as random as the items they have for sale here. You can expect to get between 0.4-0.7 cents per point. The highest value is from gift cards, which give you 0.74 cents per point.
Bottom Line: Gift cards purchased through the Travel Essentials, Seasonal, and Get More links usually have a value of 0.74 cents per point this is about half of what your points are worth when purchasing Southwest flights, but one of the better redemption values through the More Rewards portal.

Airfare & Airline Purchases
Luckily, with the Southwest Premier Card and Southwest Premier Business Card, you earn bonus points for every dollar spent on purchases with Southwest Airlines. This includes all flights, in-flight purchases, and Southwest gift cards purchased through Southwest Airlines.
However, you dont need one of these cards to start earning on your travel purchases. Your Rapid Rewards membership will start earning you points on any Southwest flight you purchase regardless of the card you use to pay.
Since Southwest Airlines is an independent carrier, you can only earn Rapid Rewards points on Southwest flights.
Being limited to Southwest for earning points on airfare may seem like a major disadvantage, but you can actually earn a lot of Rapid Rewards points each time you fly with Southwest.
Hot Tip: Dont think you are only stuck with boring domestic destinations either. Southwest flies to many international destinations too !
The points you will earn on Southwest flights are much more than many other airlines tend to offer. If you love flying Southwest, then this is wonderful news!
Of course, the number of points you earn will depend on the class of your seats.
Southwest uses fun names to define their low-cost, standard, and business class seats: theyre called Wanna Get Away, Anytime, and Business Select, respectively.
Points earned also depend on your status or tier as a Rapid Rewards member.

Southwest Buy Points Southwest Transfer Points And Southwest Gift Points Options
One option is to buy Southwest points, transfer Southwest points and gift Southwest points. As Beth mentioned in her email, the cost to buy 2,000 points is $55, which is generally speaking, not a good deal. The cost to gift points is the same, but for some reason transferring Southwest points is cheaper. You can transfer points from one user to another for $10 / 1,000 points, with a minimum of 2,000 points. Again, Im not entirely sure what the difference between gifting Southwest points and transferring Southwest points, and why youd ever want to gift Southwest points for nearly 3 times the cost, but . okay! This was the same thing I ran into when planning my 10,000 Hilton HHonors points giveaway
Refer A Friend To A Southwest Credit Card
Southwest credit cards are included under Chases refer-a-friend program, so get those referral links ready, because you can score a ton of Rapid Rewards points 10,000 points per referral, up to 50,000 points total in a calendar year by referring friends and family to a Southwest card.
The refer-a-friend bonus applies to all cards within the Southwest suite, including the business cards. Even better news: Southwest updated its refer-a-friend program in 2019, which means that current Southwest cardholders can earn bonuses on any Southwest card their referral applies for.

How Do Southwest Points Compare To Other Airline Miles
Southwest points are some of the most valuable airline points on average. Rewards with other major airlines are typically worth an average of about $0.01 to $0.015 per point/mile.
There’s a key difference between Southwest Rapid Rewards and most other frequent flyer programs. With other airlines, the value you get per mile depends heavily on the airfare you choose. You can often get a much higher value per point when you use it for more expensive airfare.
For example, if you use your airline miles to book a no-frills economy ticket, you may get $0.01 per mile or less. If you use miles to book international airfare in business or first class, you could get $0.03 per mile or more.
That’s the tradeoff for the stable value of Southwest points. You’re not going to get a low value from them, but you also won’t find any of those high-value award ticket deals like you could with other types of airline miles and travel credit cards.
It’s also worth noting that Southwest focuses more on domestic flights compared to other major U.S. carriers. If you primarily travel within the United States, then Southwest points will serve you well. Travelers who book lots of international flights may need miles with an airline that flies to more destinations.
New York To Dallas For A Weekend Trip In July
Southwest Airlines has a big presence in Dallas one of its most important routes connects it with New Yorks LaGuardia airport. We checked a long weekend in July, and heres what you can expect to pay in cash:
Heres what you can expect to pay using points for the same flights:
We then calculated the value of a Rapid Rewards point at these fares by dividing the cash price by the price in points:
- Business Select: 1.4 cents
- Wanna Get Away: 1.5 cents

Is The Southwest More Rewards Program Ever Worth It
Were not going to say you should absolutely never shop with the More Rewards program. Here are some instances where buying items that way might make sense:
You dont intend to travel on Southwest anytime soon: Shopping through More Rewards might make sense if, say, a pandemic has paused your travel plans. We generally advise against hoarding points, as loyalty programs reserve the right to change the value of their already-made-up currencies at any time in a process called devaluation. If your points become worth less over time anyway, then it might not be the end of the world to buy new Bose headphones now, even with a 130% markup. Be aware, though, that Southwest Rapid Rewards points never expire.
You need to make a purchase and want to save cash: There are plenty of situations that can arise where money is tight. You might not have the spare cash to buy a new air purifier, but West Coasters might find it imperative to spring for one to live through wildfire season. Even though you can buy an air purifying fan directly from Dyson for around $400, it’s possible to save your cash and spend 56,219 points for this air purifier through Southwest .
