What Are The 12 Spiritual Gifts

B Are Some Of These Gifts Of The Holy Spirit No Longer Given To The Church Today

Romans 12:6-8, Your Spiritual Gifts

1. This is an issue that has greatly divided the body of Christ, both theologically, and spiritually. There are some who think those who believe all the gifts are for today are deceived by Satan. There are others who think those who believe some of the gifts are no longer given are unspiritual and dead in their walk with God.

a. Often, Calvary Chapel churches are respected for their Biblical balance when it comes to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and their place in church life. Calvary Chapels have sometimes been rightly seen as too Pentecostal for the Baptists and too Baptist for the Pentecostals we have been called Pentebaptist or Bapticostal.

b. However, balance is meaningless unless it is a Biblical balance. We dont want to strike a balance between heresy and truth.

2. First, we must understand the issue. Virtually no Christian believes all the gifts have ceased in the church today. All Christians believe the gifts of teaching and administration are given and needed in the church today. It is the gifts that have a miraculous nature which are in dispute.

b. So, more accurately, the question would be: Are all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit for today? Are some of them no longer being given by God? Those who teach against the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit definitely believe they have the gift of teaching, and they believe God still gives that gift today.

3. What does the Bible say about the continuation of all the gifts of the Spirit?

What Exactly Are Spiritual Gifts

Everyone is on a unique spiritual journey with God. God never changes, but how He expresses Himself through His individual followers can differ. This reflects the fact that God has a plan for each persons life that plays a specific part in His master plan of making Himself known to the world.

So the spiritual gifts God gives people are part of His perfect plan for their lives. He gives each of His followers the same Spirit, because its His Spirit. But He knows each person perfectly, so He knows which gifts are part of His plan to work in the world through them. Not all of His followers receive the same spiritual gifts.

All of the spiritual gifts the Bible describes are significant, and they work best when used in the context of life within a community of other Christians.

Spiritual gifts are different from talents. Talents are specific abilities, like skill at the piano or in a sport. Talents can be practiced and developed through hard work. People who do not have the Holy Spirit within them still have many talents, and some of them might look like the gifts listed below. But they cannot access the enabling power of the Holy Spirit in exercising those talents.

If you are a follower of Jesus, as you continue growing spiritually, your gifts may become clearer. Over time, God uses circumstances to help you better understand your gifts and use them as part of His plan.

C The Diversity And Unity Of The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit

1. The fact of unity: believers all belong to a greater unit, the body of Jesus Christ.

For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one bodywhether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or freeand have all been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many.

a. All the members of that one body, being many, are one body for by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body: The body-like unity of Christians is not a goal to achieve it is a fact to be recognized. Paul clearly says we were all baptized into one body.

i. Passages like this have led many to regard baptism as sort of the initiation ceremony into the community of Christians. While this may be an aspect of baptism, it is not the main point. The main idea behind Christian baptism is the identification of the believer his immersion in Jesus Christ . The idea that baptism is primarily the initiation ceremony into the church has led to, and reinforced, unbiblical ideas such as the baptism of infants .

ii. But here, Paul does not have in mind water baptism as much as Spirit baptism: For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Paul here is writing of the common immersion all believers have in the Holy Spirit and in Jesus, a common immersion which brings them into one body.

2. Elaboration on the illustration of a body.

Not All Of The References Are Lists Of Gifts

Some of these references are definite lists of gifts while others are passages that mention more than one gift but cannot really be referred to as lists. Ten of these references come from the Apostle Paul while two come from Peter.

The Various Passages Where Spiritual Gifts Are Listed

The following are the various passages where spiritual gifts are listed.

Romans 12:6-8

Paul wrote to Romans with a list of the gifts of the Spirit. He listed them as follows.

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith if service, in our serving the one who teaches, in his teaching the one who exhorts, in his exhortation the one who contributes, in generosity the one who leads, with zeal the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness .

This is a rather short list.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

In First Corinthians, he gave another list. This list is rather lengthy. It reads in this manner.

This is quite an extended list.

1 Corinthians 12:28

Later in that same chapter, we read of the gifts listed in a particular order. Paul wrote.

First, God chose some people to be apostles and prophets and teachers for the church. But he also chose some to work miracles or heal the sick or help others or be leaders or speak different kinds of languages .

Some believe these are listed in their order of importance.

1 Corinthians 12:29, 30

Paul then restated the list in the form of a question. He said.

Ephesians 4:11
1 Peter 4:11

The Gift Of Leadership

Image result for 1 Corinthians 12:8

The spiritual gift of leadership is closely related to the gift of administration and, interestingly, the spiritual gift of pastor/shepherd. The Greek word for the spiritual gift of leadership is proistemi. This word means to lead, to assist, to protect and to care for others. The spiritual gift of leadership is found in Romans 12:8 sandwiched between the gifts of giving and of mercy. It is placed there intentionally to show that it is a gift associated with caring for others. This is what connects it to the gift of pastor/shepherd, and what differentiates it from the gift of administration. It is more people oriented than task oriented in its application. This is not to say those with the gift of administration do not care for people, of course they do, but those with the spiritual gift of leadership focus on people and relationships more directly.

The word proistemi is connected to caring for people in other passages as well. In 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 Paul says to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. The labor and work of those who were leading the believers in Thessalonica was that of tirelessly caring for their souls. Paul also connects leadership to caring for others when he asks, If someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for Gods church? 1 Timothy 3:5

What Fills You With Delight

If the pastor asks you to teach a Sunday School class and your heart leaps for joy at the opportunity, you probably have the gift of teaching. If you quietly and excitedly give to missionaries and charities, you probably have the gift of giving.

If you enjoy visiting the sick or taking a meal to a family in need, you may have the gift of service or exhortation. If you love organizing the annual missions conference, you likely have the gift of administration.

Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

God equips each of us with distinct motivational desires so that our service to him springs from an inexhaustible well of delight. In this way we find ourselves looking forward with excitement to what he has called us to do.

Is Prayer A Spiritual Gift

The gift of prayer is perhaps the most important and necessary spiritual practice that promotes growth as a disciple of Jesus. As we read throughout the Bible we run into people common, ordinary people who pray. These people talk to God in response to him speaking to them or because of some need.

What Does The Bible Say About Spiritual Gifts

Scripture shares that God has given gifts to each of us. We are called to use those gifts to share His love and the message of God. By using the gifts given to us, we are helping others with their relationship with God and we, too, are drawing closer to Him.

The gifts from God are not earned, they are given by Him .

Scripture shares that we are not to boast about our gifts. Our actions will not earn spiritual gifts from God. They are not rewards. They are gifts from the Father. Therefore, we do not boast about actions taken to share our spiritual gifts. We are called to share the love of Christ, not place ourselves on a pedestal. The glory goes to God, not us.

Will we know how to use our spiritual gifts the moment we receive them? Just as we strengthen our faith and walk with the Lord through studying Scripture, sharing conversation with God, and worshipping Him, our gifts may strengthen as we use them.

If there is a time when you dont know what your spiritual gift is or how to use the gift youve been given, go to God. Pray and ask for His guidance in sharing the gift.

Perhaps there may be a crisis where you need to use your gift. Pray and ask God how to best share your spiritual gift so He will be glorified, and you will be able to help someone in need.

God is ready to help us whenever we reach out to Him.

Where Are The Fruits Of The Holy Spirit Found In The Bible

Romans 12:3-8, Your Spiritual Gifts

Saint Paul, in the Letter to the Galatians , lists the fruits of the Holy Spirit. There are two different versions of the text. A shorter version, commonly used in both Catholic and Protestant Bibles today, lists nine fruits of the Holy Spirit the longer version, which Saint Jerome used in his Latin translation of the Bible known as the Vulgate, includes three more. The Vulgate is the official text of the Bible that the Catholic Church uses for that reason, the Catholic Church has always referred to the 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit.

How Many Gifts Are There What Are They

According to 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, 28-29 Romans 12:3-8 Ephesians 4:11 and 1 Corinthians 7:7, there are at least 22 spiritual gifts. They are as follows: Apostles Prophets Pastor-Teachers Evangelists Prophecy Teaching Wisdom Knowledge Faith Miraculous Powers Healing Distinguishing between Spirits Speaking in Tongues Interpretation of Tongues Helps Service Administration Encouragement Giving Leadership Mercy and Celibacy.

An Example Of Prophesy / Tongues

In 1 Corinthians 14:22-25, the bible gives us an example of what to expect when a prophesy or tongues/interpretation message is given. An unbeliever walks into the church, a supernatural message is given by God, and the secrets of that persons heart are exposed causing him to fall down and worship God. Messages given via prophecy or tongues/interpretation address issues not in the bible, i.e. not doctrinal matters. It addresses practical matters, e.g. Thus sayeth the Lord, you are committing secret sin. Repent and serve the Lord. Doctrine is not based on prophesy but on scripture.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul did not discuss prophesy in relation to future predictions. As a result some bible teachers claim that New Testament prophesy is not predictive in nature. Instead, they say that the word of wisdom refers to future predictions. I totally disagree with that, and Ill explain more in the next section.

There are two examples of prophecy in the book of Acts and both refer to future predictions. The prophet Agabus predicted that there would be a famine , and at a later time, that Paul would be bound in Jerusalem . Both were predictions. Now although the bible did not specifically call them prophecies, it did refer to Agabus as a prophet. It makes sense that a prophet prophesies. Besides, in 1 Corinthians 14, Paul did refer to those who were prophesying as prophets . So in these scriptures, there are two examples of prophecies predicting future events.

How to Determine your Spiritual Gift!

Online Bible Study 26originally for November 13, 2001

Q: Did you ever wonder why you are given a gift? A: To build the body!

We are diverging from our normal verse-by-verse inductive study into Romans to give general overview of Spiritual Gifts. It is our intention to give an honest Biblical teaching of this topic without adding into any theological or personal agenda. This is a tough task as there are so many views on Spiritual Gifts and it is an emotionally charged subject. But there are also a lot of bad and false teachings of this subject, where people read into their perceptions and agenda without concern to what God is communicating to us.It is our intention to seek plainly what the Scriptures teach us and urge you to do so too!

Spiritual Gifts have one of two areas of ministry in the church.

1. First are the “assigned offices” such as ministers, elders, and deacons, etc. These are the “offices” of , leadership roles. They must have the appropriate gifts of leadership, as well the gift in their area of ministry .They must be all working together in love and cooperative unity.

3. The role of Spiritual Gifts in the Body of Christ:

· It is the believer’s responsibility to find and develop and exercise the gifts given.

· Some of the gifts include leadership, teaching, pastoral care, mercy, giving…

· Spiritual Gifts guide us on how we are to behave and interact with each other.

The Gift Of Interpretation

The spiritual gift of interpretation of tongues is found alongside the gift of speaking in tongues in 1 Corinthians 12:10. The Greek word for interpretation is hermeneia and simply means to interpret, explain, or expound some message that is not able to be understood in a natural way. Thus, this spiritual gift is the supernatural ability to understand and explain messages uttered in an unknown language.

This is a revelatory gift, meaning that God reveals the meaning of the words or message being spoken and allows the interpreter to communicate its meaning to those who need to hear it. When this happens in the church two things happen: the church is edified and God is glorified.

The spiritual gift of interpretation is given by the Holy Spirit to certain individuals to reveal messages spoken in an unknown tongue to God for the building up of the church. Like the gift of prophecy, tongues that are interpreted have the effect of encouraging and blessing the church to love and serve God more deeply and effectively. See also 1 Corinthians 12:10, 30 14:1-28.

Why Does This Matter

God wants us to use the gifts He gives us. Its important to remember His love is a gift to us as well. John reminds us that we are able to love because God loved us first. Jesus reminded the disciples to freely give what they received. In 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, Paul makes it clear that love is what is most important. No matter what gift or gifts you receive of the Spirit, it is His love that never fails.
