Is Worship A Spiritual Gift
In John 10, Jesus says, My sheep pay attention to my voice they recognize me and follow me. This Bible scripture reminds us that Jesus does talk to his followers and that we should identify his voice. We might be tempted to believe that Jesus would only talk to the powerful. We might believe, His voice is meant for ministry leaders and missionaries, but not for regular folks like me.
Kinds Of Spiritual Gifts
There are three kinds of spiritual gifts. These gifts are not something we possess they are Gods supernatural ability showing up in our lives in various ways. The Bible calls it a manifestation.
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
There are ministry gifts, manifestation gifts, and motivational gifts. All believers take part in these gifts in various ways.
Lets look at each of them separately.
Not All Of The References Are Lists Of Gifts
Some of these references are definite lists of gifts while others are passages that mention more than one gift but cannot really be referred to as lists. Ten of these references come from the Apostle Paul while two come from Peter.
The Various Passages Where Spiritual Gifts Are Listed
The following are the various passages where spiritual gifts are listed.
Paul wrote to Romans with a list of the gifts of the Spirit. He listed them as follows.
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith if service, in our serving the one who teaches, in his teaching the one who exhorts, in his exhortation the one who contributes, in generosity the one who leads, with zeal the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness .
This is a rather short list.
In First Corinthians, he gave another list. This list is rather lengthy. It reads in this manner.
This is quite an extended list.
Later in that same chapter, we read of the gifts listed in a particular order. Paul wrote.
First, God chose some people to be apostles and prophets and teachers for the church. But he also chose some to work miracles or heal the sick or help others or be leaders or speak different kinds of languages .
Some believe these are listed in their order of importance.
Paul then restated the list in the form of a question. He said.

A Biblical Definition Of The Term Spiritual Gifts Must Line Up With Bible Teaching
Although Scripture does not define what a spiritual gift is, the Bible teaches enough on this subject to draw an adequate conclusion.
The following definition brings together some key truths from the Word of God:
A Spiritual Gift is a special divine empowerment bestowed on each believer by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a given ministry God’s way according to His grace and discernment to be used within the context of the Body of Christ.
Break down the definition, read the Scripture verses from which it is derived, and reflect on each part of it:
When you operate within this definition, you will see the church grow as each member does his/her part according to the Holy Spirit’s work following God’s design and purpose. Ephesians 4:16 reads . . .
From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
What Are Some Examples Of Spiritual Gifts
A spiritual gift or charism is an idea in which the Holy Spirit bestows remarkable power. Followers think that these are supernatural graces that individual Christians require in order to fulfill the Church’s mission. In the strictest sense, it is a theological word for the special graces bestowed on individual Christians for the benefit of others, as opposed to personal sanctification graces such as the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
The word of knowledge, enhanced faith, healing gifts, miraculous gifts, prophecy, spirit discernment, various kinds of tongues, and tongue interpretation are examples of these skills, which are often referred to as charismatic gifts. The gifts of apostles, prophets, teachers, aids , and governments are also associated with various Church ministries. Individuals are given these gifts by the Holy Spirit, but their mission is to build up the entire Church. They’re mentioned in the New Testament, namely in 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, and Ephesians 4. Spiritual gifts are also mentioned in 1 Peter 4.
The gifts are tied to both natural and miraculous abilities, both of which are empowered by the Holy Spirit. The two primary theological viewpoints on their nature are that they have long since ceased or that they continue .

The Gift Of Exhortation
The spiritual gift of exhortation is often called the gift of encouragement. The Greek word for this gift is parakaleo. It means to beseech, exhort, call upon, to encourage and to strengthen. The primary means of exhortation is to remind the hearer of the powerful and amazing work of God in Christ, particularly in regard to the saving work of Jesus in the atonement. We see Paul commanding Titus to use this gift in Titus 1:9 and throughout chapter 2, particularly Titus 2:11-15. He also charges Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2.
The Spirit of God gives this gift to people in the church to strengthen and encourage those who are wavering in their faith. Those with the gift of exhortation can uplift and motivate others as well as challenge and rebuke them in order to foster spiritual growth and action. The goal of the encourager is to see everyone in the church continually building up the body of Christ and glorifying God. See also Romans 12:8, Acts 11:23-24 14:21-22 15:32.

Different Perspectives On Spiritual Gifts
While most believers agree that spiritual gifts exist, there are different views about whether all the gifts we see in the Bible are still given to Christians today.
Some people believe that the Holy Spirit gave certain gifts only for a short period after Christ returned to heaven. They believe the purpose of these gifts was to reveal Gods glory and validate the message the early followers of Jesus were preaching. This was necessary because believers did not have the Bible as we do today since the New Testament had not been written yet.
Others believe that all spiritual gifts are still being given to believers today and are still being used to reveal God and draw others to Him. They believe that all the gifts are given to the church, which is what we call all followers of Christ everywhere . Each persons gift and all work together to advance Gods kingdom.

A What Is A Spiritual Gift
1. DefinitionA spiritual gift is a specific God-given ability for Christian service.
2. Distinguished from Gifts Given to All BelieversThere are certain blessings from God that are referred to as gifts and are endowed to all believers: salvation, eternal life, the Holy Spirit, justification, perhaps others. However, spiritual gifts are distinguished from the above gifts in that the spiritual gifts are distributed among believers: one in this manner, and another in that .
3. Distinguished from a Natural Gift Three things should be noted: a. A natural gift is one that a person is endowed with genetically, such as musicality. It is present at birth though it needs to be developed into a talent or skill. A spiritual gift is one that is endowed by God at the new birth.b. Some natural and spiritual gifts may appear the same outwardly, such as the gift of teaching but one may have the natural gift of teaching without having the spiritual gift.c. Spiritual gifts may be expressed through natural gifts. If one has the natural gift of musicality and the spiritual gift of teaching, he or she may use his gift of teaching through the writing and singing of songs that teach biblical truth. Many of the Reformation hymns are of this nature.

Gifts Of The Holy Spirit: Manifestation
Manifestation gifts are the ones people tend to sensationalize and therefore disqualify themselves from enjoying. In 1 Corinthians 12:7, it says God gives to each of us, not just some. This means everyone.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another amessage of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to others gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to others miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
This supernatural demonstration of the Holy Spirits power is to serve others as well as minister to ourselves. Its commonly thought these gifts are only to minister to others but thats limiting the grace of God. The Spirit can give you a message of wisdom when you ask for one in your life just as easily as He can give one to you to deliver to someone else. Let the Holy Spirit minister to you also.
These manifestation gifts are how God works through us bringing joy and fruitfulness in every one of our lives.
9 Manifestations of the Holy Spirit
- A message of wisdom
- Speaking in different kinds of tongues
- The interpretation of tongues
Why Do The Spiritual Gifts Matter
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Ephesians 4:11-12
1 Corinthians 12:7 says, Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
Your Spiritual Gift matters because it is meant to benefit the body of Christ.
In Romans 12 we learn that we are all members of the same body. Just like a human body would not benefit by having all of one body part and none of another, the body of Christ requires a diversity of members to run smoothly, serve well, and spread the Good News.
Our Spiritual Gifts provide the diversity needed in both the local and global church.
Think of an orchestra. An orchestra wouldnt work well if everyone showed up with the same instrument. It would cease to be an orchestra. Similarly, if all of the instruments of the orchestra played the same note, it would lose the beauty of the harmonizing music.
Spiritual Gifts are not intended for personal gain or enjoyment . They are meant for ministry, for providing benefit to others, and for creating something pleasing to God Himself.

C When Are The Gifts Given
If each one has received a gift, then it is clear that all believers receive at least one gift at the moment of salvation. Also, no passage indicates that a believer may receive a gift subsequent to salvation.
What are we to make of 1 Corinthians 12:31, then? But earnestly desire the greater gifts. Why should believers desire the greater gifts if they cannot receive any more? The answer lies in the fact that Paul was exhorting the church as a unit, not the individual believers in it . 1 Corinthians 12:28 names eight gifts in descending order of greatness, naming those gifts first that are most essential for the establishment and health of the body: And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. If the Corinthian church was lacking in ministry from those holding the greater gifts, they were to draw out such ministry from those so gifted among them, or invite such ministry from elsewhere in the body.
The Gift Of Discernment
The spiritual gift of discernment is also known as the gift of discernment of spirits or distinguishing between spirits. The Greek word for the gift of discernment is diakrisis. The word describes being able to distinguish, discern, judge or appraise a person, statement, situation, or environment. In the New Testament it describes the ability to distinguish between spirits as in 1 Corinthians 12:10, and to discern good and evil as in Hebrews 5:14.
The Holy Spirit gives the gift of discernment to enable certain Christians to clearly recognize and distinguish between the influence of God, Satan, the world, and the flesh in a given situation. The church needs those with this gift to warn believers in times of danger or keep them from being led astray by false teaching. See also I Corinthians 12:10, Acts 5:3-6 16:16-18 1 John 4:1.
