What Are The Seven Spiritual Gifts In The Bible

What Are The Seven Motivational Gifts

Ed Hindson – The Seven Spiritual Gifts

In his letter to the Roman Christians, the Apostle Paul challenges them to use their spiritual gifts: For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching or he that exhorteth on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity he that ruleth, with diligence he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness .

The gifts mentioned here are seven motivational spiritual gifts. Each Christian receives one at the time of salvation, and it is the tool through which God works in him or her to see needs and to do something to meet them. These gifts equip believers to take a vital role in the Church.

Below are details about each of the seven motivational gifts, including Biblical examples of those who had the gifts, exhortations from Romans 12 about properly exercising the gifts, and the life principles that best complement the strengths and weaknesses of the gifts.

A person with the motivational gift of prophecy applies the Word of God to a situation so that sin is exposed and relationships are restored. He or she has a strong sense of right and wrong and speaks out against compromise and evil.

How Do You Receive The Gift Of The Holy Spirit

Peter, in his Pentecost sermon, gives to us the answer: Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. To be filled and led by the Spirit of God does not require any great spiritual work on our part.

Here’s How To Identify The 7 Spiritual Gifts

God grants amazing gifts to His children in order to help us live with grace and to proclaim the love of God we receive. According to the Bible, there are seven gifts, or attributes, that are received from God at Baptism, and further strengthened at Confirmation. By understanding these gifts, we can identify when they are present in our lives and give thanks to God.

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. Isaiah 11:1-3a

The Word Of Wisdom The 9 Gifts Of The Holy Spirit

This next gift at times will work in conjunction with the word of knowledge. Sometimes all you need is a direct word of knowledge from the Holy Spirit and it will completely solve the problem or dilemma you are dealing with.

However, there will be other times that a word of knowledge will not be quite enough to solve the problem. This is where you will now need a word of wisdom. A word of wisdom will give you the ability to be able to properly apply the knowledge that you may already have on a particular situation.

In our article, Seeking After the Knowledge of God, we explain to you the difference between knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. For instance, if someone gives you a car manual that will show you how to rebuild a car engine, that manual will give you all of the actual knowledge you will need to learn how to do it. But all of that knowledge will not do you any good unless you first understand what you are reading.

If you can understand what you are reading, then the next and final step will be to have the actual wisdom to be able to actually rebuild a car engine out in your garage once you try and do it. All of that knowledge from the car manual, and all of that understanding of that knowledge will do you no good in real life if you do not have the wisdom to be able to apply that knowledge to a real life working situation.

Here are some specific examples where we could receive words of wisdom direct from the Holy Spirit:

One Body But Many Parts

iChoose2 Get to Week 15!

12 There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ. 13 We were all baptized by one Holy Spirit. And so we are formed into one body. It didnt matter whether we were Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free people. We were all given the same Spirit to drink. 14 So the body is not made up of just one part. It has many parts.

15 Suppose the foot says, I am not a hand. So I dont belong to the body. By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. 16 And suppose the ear says, I am not an eye. So I dont belong to the body. By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how could it smell? 18 God has placed each part in the body just as he wanted it to be. 19 If all the parts were the same, how could there be a body? 20 As it is, there are many parts. But there is only one body.

  • What Are The Spiritual Gifts

What are spiritual gifts? Before we dive straight into looking at the list, we need to cover the basics of the purpose of these gifts. So thats what were going to take a look at first. What does the Bible say about spiritual gifts? In Corinthians 12:1, we can read: Now about the gifts of the spirit, brothers, and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.

The concept is one that is explored numerous times throughout the Bible and in a number of different ways. Its even acknowledged in the above passage that the gifts can be a bit confusing and that many people are misinformed.

However, the first mention of them is actually in Romans 1:11-12 when Paul says I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each others faith, both yours and mine.

This may seem a little confusing but it is actually the clearest description of what these gifts are. They arent physical gifts like frankincense or myrrh, but rather they are gifts of the spirit, and these gifts arent always obvious, even to those who possess them.

Why Do The Spiritual Gifts Matter

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Ephesians 4:11-12

1 Corinthians 12:7 says, Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Your Spiritual Gift matters because it is meant to benefit the body of Christ.

In Romans 12 we learn that we are all members of the same body. Just like a human body would not benefit by having all of one body part and none of another, the body of Christ requires a diversity of members to run smoothly, serve well, and spread the Good News.

Our Spiritual Gifts provide the diversity needed in both the local and global church.

Think of an orchestra. An orchestra wouldnt work well if everyone showed up with the same instrument. It would cease to be an orchestra. Similarly, if all of the instruments of the orchestra played the same note, it would lose the beauty of the harmonizing music.

Spiritual Gifts are not intended for personal gain or enjoyment . They are meant for ministry, for providing benefit to others, and for creating something pleasing to God Himself.

Are Some Gifts More Important Than Others

    7 Spiritual Gifts

Yes! Prophecy is the most important. Speaking in tongues is the least. All the others fall somewhere in between . The relative value of spiritual gifts is to be tested by their usefulness to the church as a whole. Paul’s wrote that due to the interdependent nature of all of the gifts, there should be no spiritual pride associated with any of these gifts.

How Many Spiritual Gifts Are In The Bible

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are an enumeration of seven spiritual gifts originating from patristic authors, later elaborated by five intellectual virtues and four other groups of ethical characteristics. They are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.

    Identifying And Defining Spiritual Gifts

1 Corinthians 12 states that spiritual gifts are given to God’s people by the Holy Spirit for “the common good.” Verse 11 says the gifts are given according to God’s sovereign will, “as he determines.” Ephesians 4:12 tells us these gifts are given to prepare God’s people for service and for building up the body of Christ.

The term “spiritual gifts” comes from the Greek words charismata and pneumatika . They are the plural forms of charisma, meaning “expression of grace,” and pneumatikon meaning “expression of Spirit.”

While there are different kinds of gifts , generally speaking, spiritual gifts are God-given graces meant for works of service, to benefit and build up the body of Christ as a whole.

Although a great deal of disagreement exists between denominations, most Bible scholars classify the spiritual gifts into three categories: ministry gifts, manifestation gifts, and motivational gifts.

The Working Of Miracles The 9 Gifts Of The Holy Spirit

This next gift from the Holy Spirit is where you can get into some real heavy, jaw-dropping, knock-your-socks off type of supernatural activity from Him.

Some of the different Bible Dictionaries describe the word miracle as the following:

    • An intervention in the natural universe by God
    • A phenomena that transcends natural laws
    • A divine act by which God reveals Himself to people

Good examples of actual miracles from the Bible are the following:

  • Jesus and the apostles healing and casting demons out of people.
  • Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding of Cana.
  • Jesus feeding 5000 people by multiplying 5 loaves of bread and two fish.
  • God parting the Red Sea for Moses and the children of Israel.
  • Daniel not being eaten by the lions in the lions den.
  • Peter walking on water.
  • If you study the Bible very carefully from start to finish, it is literally one miracle after another with both God the Father and Jesus Christ. Our God is a miracle-working God and He still loves to do them for His people.

The Bible says that God does not change, and if both Him and Jesus were constantly doing miracles in both the OT and NT, then God will also be wanting to do miracles in our day and age.

And with this specific gift being listed as one of the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit, then you know that God is trying to tell all of us that He still wants to do them, even in the jaded and skeptical times that we are now currently living in.

What Are The 7 Spiritual Gifts

The Holy Spirit" s many gifts according to scripture ...

Although a life with Christ offers more gifts than we can imagine, lets focus on what are the seven spiritual gifts discussed in the book of Romans also referred to as motivational gifts.

We have gifts that differ according to the grace that was given to usif prophecy, in proportion to our faith if service, in our serving or the one who teaches, in his teaching or the one who exhorts, in his exhortation the one who gives, in generosity the one who leads, with diligence the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8 TLV

    Can Spiritual Gifts Be Misused

Yes! For example, Paul described the use and misuse of the gift of tongues in the Corinthian church . For example, Paul taught that speaking in tongues without someone in attendance with the gift of interpretation will only bring confusion to the church family and ridicule from unbelievers.

Accordingly, when I was pastoring, in order to curtail the misuse of the gift of tongues in our church worship services, we encouraged people to use the gifts of tongues and interpreting tongues only in private settings. To use them in a worship service when most of the folks have no idea whats going on is to invite great misunderstanding and confusion.

When we were laying down the guidelines for the use of the gift of tongues in our worship services our Christian education pastor said, Ive got a great idea. If some woman stands up in the midst of a worship service and begins speaking in tongues, Ill wait until shes finished. Then, I will say to the crowd, I have the gift of interpreting tongues and this sweet lady has just donated her house to the building fund.

Are Spiritual Gifts The Best Sign Of Spirituality

No! Christ-like maturity is primarily indicated by the manifestation of the Fruit of the Spirit, not by the presence of spiritual gifts .

God may choose to shine forth in a spiritually immature baby Christian. However, that does not make the baby spiritual. A spiritual child may say excitedly, “I got the gift of tongues last night and now Im spiritual!”

But, Jesus said: “For by their fruit you shall know them” .

Satan can imitate and counterfeit spiritual gifts, but he is baffled in trying to imitate the Fruit of the Spirit.

    Do Not Be Unknowledgeable

First Corinthians 12 starts with a powerful statement from Paul: I do not want you to be ignorant

This may sound harsh, but Paul is warning the Church that we must stay spiritually awake, understanding and searching the scriptures so that we can stand firm in the faith. One way to stay awake is to seek and ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Apostle Paul is speaking to the Gentiles in Corinth, but his message applies to us today in that we can get carried away with past idols. So then, we must stay aligned with God, not allowing the old to carry us away from the new that God has.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit take you into deeper waters with God. As Jesus said in Luke 12:48, to whom much is given, from him much will be required Therefore, we cannot be spiritually asleep and expect to activate these gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Let us wake up to the new thing God wants to do! We have a charge to ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and to utilize them for the Body of Christ.

We should not be ignorant about how the gifts of the Holy Spirit are manifested.

    • Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.1 Corinthians 12:1-3
