What Do Teachers Really Want For Gifts

But For Those Of You Who Love To Give We Appreciate That Too Let Me Give You Some Tips That Will Help You To Give Your Childs Teacher What He Or She Really Wants This Holiday Season

What do Teachers REALLY want for Christmas? BEST Teacher Gift Ideas (from a TEACHER!)

First of all, let me tell you a story about a teacher I know very well: my mom. For many years, she worked at a preschool in our hometown. She saw three to four classes of three and four-year-olds every year. On the last days before winter break, she would bring home boxes and boxes of wrapped gifts from her students. My sister and I would help her open and document each gift. We unwrapped ornaments, candy, candles, picture framesbut the items that moved her the most were the notes from the parents and the children about how she had made a difference in the lives of their kids. Those were the gifts she held onto while many of the others were eaten ) or packed away. So, even if you dont have a lot of money to spend, just know that teachers do cherish even a card with words of appreciation.

And, for those of you who feel led to give something more, I consulted some of my colleagues to find out which gifts they have ranked as the best.

Elementary teachers obviously spend the most time with one group of students all day. Older kids may be able to tell you about some of their teachers hobbies or interests that they talk about in the classroom. Maybe they sent home an introduction letter at the beginning of the year or have a bio posted on the schools website. This may give you ideas of some places to get a gift card for the teacher. If you are a room parent and are collecting for one gift from the classroom this may be a good idea as well.

Personalized Pencils That Have A Better Chance Of Actually Being Returned When Students Borrow One

My mother and I are both teachers and our biggest pet peeve are students who ask to borrow a pencil, never give it back, and have the nerve to ask for another one the next day. So for my birthday she ordered me 1,000 pencils with the words “Please Return to Ms. –” on the sides. Literally the best thing ever, and it works too!

Gifts Teachers Dont Really Want:

1. Apples

There are so many cute apple things out there for teachers. They make you think of your childs teacher. Hold yourself back, refrain, do not purchase, you can do it! They dont want it! Even a real apple can become quite a mess by the time your child gets it to school.

2. Stuffed Animals nope!

3. Ceramic Figurines sorry!

4. Homemade treats

This one may come as a surprise! Many factors here: 6 kids may bring in treats, the teacher is on a diet or has food allergies. All in all, save yourself the time and energy!

5. Perfume and Candles

May sound like a grand idea or youve had one to re-gift for a while. But certain scents are very off-putting to people.

6. Coffee Mugs

I know, you got a great deal at the Dollar Store! Try to refrain!

Not Everyone Can Afford Gifts Either In Money Or Time

What actually Do Instructors Really Want For Items? # ...

What I dislike most about gifts for teachers is the pressure they place on families who do not have the resources be it in time or money to keep up with the gift giving arms race. Anyone who is on a message board or social media group for a school can tell you that things get out of hand quickly when discussing educator presents.

Parent 1:Im thinking of getting Ms. X a $20 Target gift card. Do you think thats enough?

Parent 2: Oh my gosh are you all giving gifts to all the teachers?! I didnt realize I was supposed to! Do we have to give them to the Guidance Counselors too??? Id better run to the store! And so on.

All of a sudden, the mother who is working three jobs is forced to squeeze in an extra trip to the store, and extra two hours of present organization in order to not be rude or look bad.

PLEASE, if you start feeling this pressure to give presents and are feeling terrible about it, STEP AWAY, AND DO NOT GIVE GIFTS. It is not worth it. More on alternatives later, but know that no teacher is going to hate you if you dont give a gift. Presents are NOT required, nor expected, and in many cases they just cause problems.

Summary Of This Teacher Gift Advice:

The most important message to take away from this article is that if you enjoy giving teachers gifts, great do what feels good to you, keeping in mind what will be the most useful and fitting gift for the educator, their classroom, or the school. If giving presents brings you happiness, go right ahead!

However, if you are one of the 80% of humans who find gift giving stressful, I implore you to realize: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE TEACHERS GIFTS. It breaks my heart to see the anguish families feel each year around this topic. If you want to show appreciation to teachers, a letter will more than suffice.

There is no need to pour so much time and money into presents. So many other methods exist to show love to our worlds dear educators. Heck you could even advocate for pro-education legislation and make systemic change.

Donate To A Teachers Favorite Cause

Peggy Mannion, an eighth grade social studies teacher in San Francisco, remembers one especially meaningful gift:

A student made a donation to the American Cancer Society in my name. I liked that, because, you know, I dont need anything! I mean if somebody said I gave ten dollars to a homeless person instead of buying you a gift, Id be thrilled!

Get A Wish List From The Teacher

The ULTIMATE Teacher Gift Guide | What Teachers REALLY Want for the Holidays

One parent shared this practical approach for pooling resources and getting teachers things they need:

Most teachers equip their classroom using their own money. I ask the teacher what he/she could use for the classroom and put together a wish list and pass that out to the parents.

I found that most teachers wish for a globe, a stack of books, dictionaries, craft material, replacement parts for the computer like a mouse or mouse pad. Often these items are more than what an individual parent wants to spend, but if two or three join together the item can be bought. This helps the teacher by keeping those coffee cups to a minimum and helps your child too, by providing better instructional materials.

You can also:

Donate a book to the school library in honor of the teacher. Make a donation in honor of the teacher to the PTA, a school foundation or a childrens charity. Give a gift certificate good for One day of cutting out art projects from Janes Mom.

Teachers Tell Us The Gifts They Actually Want To Receive At The End Of Term

Its almost the end of term and its probably time for your child to say goodbye to their teacher.

Teachers can have a huge impact so you might want to say thank you for everything theyve done.

One mum posted earlier this week about how she was humiliated by other parents when she said she couldnt afford £40 for a joint class present for six teachers.

So what should you buy for the teachers end of term present? And do you have to buy something?

The answer simply is no. Although its nice to show appreciation, teachers dont expect something for teaching your child.

A Mumsnet survey of 1,200 teachers and teaching assistants last year found nearly two thirds would like to receive a heartfelt personal note from their pupils.

Almost half said they value any present, but 77% worry that parents or carers may feel pressured into contributing to a whole-class gift and 68% worry about children feeling left out if their parents cant afford to contribute.

If your budget is tight, you really dont have to spend a lot. A nice card is perfect or a handwritten message telling them how much they mean to your child.

Primary school teacher Sam tells Metro.co.uk: For me, I think the important thing is to remember that no teacher expects gifts, I definitely dont want anyone to feel obliged to get me anything particularly if they are having a tough time with money.

Lots of families are on a lower budget, so I definitely dont want anyone to feel they have to spend money on me.

I had some gift certificates for years because I didnt have the money to come out of my pocket to use them, and I didnt feel right regifting them, Sno tells SheKnows.

GIFTS TEACHERS LOVE AND HATE! WHAT TO BUY A TEACHER? | EMILY NORRIS

In my experience as a teacher and a parent, gift giving organization duties fall 99% of the time on the female head of household. Moreover, the time, money, and energy burden that falls on these women is not cheap.

As a teacher, I do not want to be part of the mental load thrust unfairly upon my fellow females in any way. I would much rather the women of the world get an extra two hours of sleep than shop for me or better yet, help their children organize their backpacks!

Books For The Classroom Library

Did you know that teachers spend their own money to build their classroom libraries? Have you ever seen how many books there are? Help them add to their collection by donating some of your familys favorites to the class library. Not only will it motivate your own child to read more in the classroom since they helped donate some of the books, but it will expose other children to wonderful books that they might otherwise not know about.

Tip: Ask the teacher if there are any books he has been wanting to get for the classroom library if you are stumped about what to get. Chances are he may have a few titles that he has been wanting to add.
