What Is The Gift Of Tongues

How Do You Know That The Holy Spirit Dwells Within You

What Is the Gift of Tongues?

The Charismatic answer:

“How do I know that the Holy Spirit dwells within me?” Charismatic Renewal offers an answer to this questionthe baptism of the Holy Spirit, a powerful experience that convinces the recipient that God is real.;

In other words, “I know that it is true because I have experienced it. I have feltit. It has happened to me!; I have spoken in tongues!”

The Biblical answer is found in Romans8:9–“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the _________________ of God______________ in _____. Now if any man have not the __________________ of Christ, he is none of His.” If aperson does not have the Holy Spirit, then he is not His. He does not belong to Christ. Heis not a Christian. If I am a saved person, then I have the Holy Spirit. How do I know?I know so because God says so. All who believe on Christ have received the Spirit . Paul said, “The Holy Spirit dwelleth _______ us” and this istrue of every blood-bought child of God. According to God’s definition , a Christian is one who is indwelt by the Holy Spirit and thus hasreceived the Spirit. There is no such thing as a person who is justified by faith but whohas not received the Spirit.

The fact of the Spirit’s reception and indwelling presence is not based on somesubjective and questionable experience. It is based upon the plain statements of the Wordof God.;

What Is The Gift Of Tongues: Real Languages Or Unintelligible Utterances

Let us first consider the speaking in tongues that is taking place today. What actuallyis being spoken? Is it a real language or is it nonsense gibberish?

In other words, go to a Charismatic gathering where people speak in tongues, record thetongues speaking on a tape recorder, bring the tape recorder to the best linguisticscholars you can find, let them study the tongues utterances, and what will theirconclusion be? They will conclude that the utterances are linguistic nonsense and not anylanguage at all.

How different the modern tongues movement is from the tongues speaking that we read about on the pages of the Bible.The key passage on this is Acts chapter 2 where we have the Bible’s first occurrence ofthe gift of tongues. What was spoken on the day of Pentecost? There is no question butthat these were real languages: “Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude cametogether, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his ownL___________________….And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

Another key chapter is 1 Corinthians 14. From this chapter we find two strong argumentsto support the fact that tongues consisted of real languages:

For further argumentation that the gift of tongues consisted of real languages thatwere spoken on earth, see God’s Gift of Tongues, by George Zeller, pages 107-110,”Twelve Reasons Why Biblical Tongues Were Real Languages.”;

Tongues As A Form Of Praise

Just as Paul spoke of practicing the gift of tongues as a prayer language, he also wrote about singing in tongues and praising God in the Spirit.;;;;

This form the gift is called praise and worship, also known as singing in the Spirit.;;;

So, what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.;

Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say Amen to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?

1 Corinthians 14:15-16

Many of us have found through experience that there is great power in this act of singing in the spirit.;;

Often after a time of corporate worshiping in the Spirit,;a;holy;silence;will fall;on the group that is filled with the manifest presence of Jesus Christ.;;;

It seems that the abandonment to singing in tongues, welcomes Jesus to come and work in our midst.;As Reverend Woods defines this experience as,

Singing in the Spirit is when the Holy Spirit leads people into giving praise to him through melodies and words that are inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is as if there is an invisible conductor who leads the worship.;;

Did Your Salvation Package Include The Gift Of The Holy Spirit

Do you have a full and complete salvation or are there certain things that are missing?The Word of God teaches that our salvation package is full and complete. When we receivedChrist by faith , we also received all that comes with Christ, including thefollowing:

Complete forgiveness of sins Membership in the body of Christ Entrance into the family of God Peace with God The gift of eternal life AND SO MUCH MORE!!!;

Is the blessed Person and Presence of the Holy Spirit included in our initial salvationpackage or is the reception of the Spirit something not to be realized until some latertime? This is answered in Romans 5:5–“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the loveof God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us” .; Based on this verse, was the Holy Spirit given to you at the point of salvation or is the Spirit to be received sometime after salvation? ______________________________________________________________

Our Charismatic friends often speak of a “full gospel.” By using this term they implythat others do not have a full gospel: “The simple preaching of Christ and the crossis not enough. Simple salvation in Christ is not enough. There is more that you need. Youneed to have the Pentecostal experience of speaking in tongues, etc.” Compare 1Corinthians 2:2.

Speaking In Tongues As A Sign For Unbelievers

What is the gift of tongues??

There is another reason the gift of tongues is given:;In the law it is written: With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me, says the Lord. Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers.;1 Corinthians 14:21-22. In this way, it could benefit those who attend a gathering but have not yet committed their life to Christ.

There are also occurrences in the book of Acts in which people who were baptized with the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues at the same time. This occurred most notably on the day of Pentecost when the baptism of the Holy Spirit was given for the first time, though it did also occur at other times . However there is nothing written that these two always are to occur together.

Speaking In Tongues Should Be Done Orderly And With Interpretation

The biggest problem concerning tongues within Pentecostalism today isignoring Paul’s admonition of orderliness and control. Paul rightly paints apicture of your experience when he writes “If the whole church assemblestogether and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, willthey not say that you are mad?” It’s clear that Paul istrying to let the Corinthians know that tongues should not be abused. He notesthat true spiritual gifts are under the control of the person possessing them and they are therefore able to control the manifestation of thosegifts.

Paul continues, “Let all things be done for edification. If anyonespeaks in a tongue, it should be two or at most three, and each in turn, and onemust interpret; but if there is no interpretation, he must keep silent in thechurch; let him speak to himself and to God” . Paul also saysthat interpretation of tongues is important since speaking in tongues benefitsthe spirit of man, but it doesn’t help us know God or know about Him any better.That’s why “one who speaks should pray to interpret also, otherwise yourmind is not blessed and neither are the others around you” .Again, people become so enamored with some kind of miraculous experience thatthey seek the emotion rather than seeking to know God in a way that will affecttheir lives.

The Converts Of Apollos

The next instance recorded of the gift of tongues in the early church was among the converts of Apollos at Ephesus. Apollos had baptized his converts with the baptism of John, and when Paul came to Ephesus, he asked these believers whether they had received the gift of the Holy Spirit. When they replied that they had not, he instructed them and baptized them in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Paul laid his hands upon them; they received the gift of the Holy Spirit, and prophesied and spoke with tongues. Again there is nothing to indicate that the gift given here was any different essentially from the gift at Pentecost. It is not known whether there were those present who understood the phrases that came from these converts’ lips when they received the gift. It is not known what tongues they spoke. It may well have been that Gentiles were present and that the gift was given especially for their benefit.

That this gift was an actual language, that it continued with these men, and that it was given for a purpose is indicated by Ellen G. White:

‘They were then baptized in the name of Jesus; and as Paul ‘laid his hands upon them,’ they;received also the baptism of the Holy Spirit, by which they were enabled to speak the languages of other nations, and to prophesy. Thus they were qualified to labor as missionaries in Ephesus and its vicinity, and also to go forth to proclaim the gospel in Asia Minor.”The Review and Herald, Aug. 31, 1911.

  • Bible Q&a: What Is The Gift Of Speaking In Tongues And Is It For Today

    What is the gift of tongues? Is speaking in tongues the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

    Our Bible Q&A series explores the questions youve asked us about the Bible.

    This article represents the authors personal view. It accords with;Bible;Societys values, but is not intended to express our position as an organisation.

    Question: What is the gift of speaking in tongues, and is it for today?;

    Answer:

    The gift of tongues is one of the gifts of the Spirit described in the New Testament.;

    These gifts are things God allows us to do to serve and encourage one another by his power, and they signify that a believer has the Holy Spirit in their lives. They are exercised through faith.;

    One problem is deciding whether what modern-day Christians mean by the gift of tongues matches what the Bible says. Today, speaking in tongues can also be described as glossolalia: the speaker makes utterances that form words, but the words cant be recognised as belonging to a known language such as French or;Latin. This happens frequently in Pentecostal and;charismatic traditions, where these words are believed to be spoken under the direction of the Holy Spirit, meaning they have spiritual significance. In 1 Corinthians 13.1, Paul mentions the tongue of angels in the context of speaking in tongues. In light of this, many charismatics interpret the language to be a heavenly or spiritual language.;;

    Can Unsaved People Speak In Tongues

    The Biblical gift of tongues was the supernatural ability to speak in a foreignlanguage which the speaker had never learned. An unsaved person would not have theGod-given ability to do this. Spiritual gifts are given to believers at the point ofsalvation, not to unbelievers.

    The modern day phenomena of speaking ecstatic utterances is somethingquite different. There are countless examples of unsaved people speaking in tongues. Hereare but a few:

    1) In the second century the Montanists spoke in tongues. This was a heretical groupespecially noted for their heresies concerning the Holy Spirit. The following account is adescription of Montanus and his followers by Eusebius in his History of the Church:

    According to Eusebius, this practice of tongues speaking was totally contrary to thepractice of the church. Indeed, Montanus and his followers were excommunicated from thechurch.

    2) Irenaeus wrote the following concerning the second century heretic Marcus:

    The orthodox leaders of the early church recognized that such emotional outbursts oftongues speaking were not of God. It was a phenomena encouraged by the heretics.

    3) The Cevenol priests who lived in France in the late 17th century also spoke intongues. They were branded heretics because their prophecies went unfulfilled.;

    6) The followers of Edward Irving spoke in tongues. These people hadrevelations that contradicted Scripture, prophecies that went unfulfilled and they promotedvarious erroneous teachings.

    Summary Question 23 What Is The Gift Of Interpretation Of Tongues

    The Bible speaks of a spiritual gift of speaking in tongues as well as the spiritual gift of the interpretation of the language spoken.

    We can define the gift of interpretation of tongues is a supernatural ability to understand the tongue language and translate it. It is not the ability to translate a foreign language. The nature of the tongue-language is debated. It was either definite foreign languages or some type of ecstatic utterance that no human could understand.

    We know that those with the gift of interpretation of tongues were commanded to turn the congregation toward God not to the speaker.

    There are a number of things that can be deduced about the gift of interpretation of tongues. They include the following.

    First, there seem to be known interpreters in the congregation at Corinth. These interpreters were able to explain any tongue that was spoken. Unless one of these interpreters was present the people were to keep silent as far as exercising the gift of tongues.

    Also only one interpreter was supposed to practice his or her gift during the church meeting. Thus, there were a limited number of speakers as well as a limited number of interpreters.

    What Is The Purpose Of The Gift Of Speaking Of Tongues

    All the gifts in the Bible play an important role building up the church and furthering the gospel of Jesus Christ. As for the speaking in tongues this gift plays a very important role. Here are some of the purposes of the gift:

    • To Give God Praise (praise, worship and singing in tongues Acts 2:5-12, I cor 14:15
    • Praying to God Supernaturally 1 Corinthians 14:28, Romans 8:26-27
    • To Edify Yourself 1 Corinthians 14:4, 15-16
    • Edification, Exhortation, Comfort When the interpretation of tongues is combined the church is built up. It is equal to prophesy 1 Corinthians 14:5
    • A sign to the unbeliever 1 Corinthians 14:22-25

    The Goal Of Gathering And The Gift Of Tongues

    The Gift of Tongues

    Whenever we are gathered in our local churches, the goal should be to edify one other. But the only way that we can do that is if we all understand what is being said. This principle must be applied to the gift of tongues today. God requires that there be an interpreter. This is so that the congregation can understand what is being said. Anything short of this does not benefit the church or honour Gods purposes for the spiritual gifts. The Spirit works towards building up and maturing the church. Tongues without interpretation is an immature abuse of the gift, which cannot edify believers.

    The Gift Of Tongues Is From The Holy Spirit And Spoken Only To God

    Speaking in tongues is only spoken to God. Like other gifts, speaking in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Not everyone is bestowed of this gift. Paul writes,

    Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines .

    This verse means that each and everyone has a gift from the Spirit but is different from each other. Some have talents that others do not have, and it is true with the gift of speaking in tongues. Now, because speaking in tongues is a gift from the Spirit, therefore, it is only spoken to God Almighty.
